Smelly Feet

Smelly feet can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. Fortunately, treatment options are available.  A foot doctor can provide treatment, but before making an appointment, consider the cause and prevention.

Causes
Feet can smell as they sweat and it traps inside footwear. Sweat interacts with bacteria to cause the smell. Feet have more sweat glands than any other part of the body.  Footwear prevents the sweat from evaporating. The bacteria produces acid and causes odor.

A number of conditions can increase the chance for smelly feet, such as a stress, certain drugs, and hormonal changes.

Prevention

Good foot hygiene can reduce bacteria to low levels.
• Bathe feet daily in lukewarm water with a mild soap and dry thoroughly, especially between the toes.
• Change socks at least once a day (change shoes as well).
• Dust feet frequently with a foot powder (always wipe between toes to remove excess moisture.

Wear thick, soft socks to help absorb the moisture. Natural fiber socks such as wool or cotton and other absorbent materials are better.

Avoid the use of nylon socks or plastic shoes - wear shoes that are made of leather, canvas, mesh or other materials that let feet breathe.

Its is best not to wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row - they need time to dry out. Remove  inner soles from to help with the drying.

Treatment

If the preventative measures above for foot odor do not help, then further treatment by a podiatrist for more aggressive management may be indicated.

Stronger medications can be prescribed.

Electric-current devices that pass a small electrical current through the skin can effectively diminish perspiration for several weeks.melly feet, foot odor, treatment, causes, symptoms, shoes, socks, smelly feet, foot odor, treatment, causes, symptoms, shoes, socks
